The Lewes Workplace Cycle Challenge 2010 was funded by Lewes District Council, with additional funding from the DEFRA Air Quality Grants Programme. The Challenge engaged 37 organisations and almost 500 people, with 85 people taking to their bikes for the first time in over a year.

"One of the greatest challenges in terms of improving air quality is encouraging people to leave their cars at home. The Workplace Cycle Challenge targets the right people and genuinely encourages behavioural change in a fun and accessible way. It also builds a data base of local companies and cycle champions that will prove invaluable for future engagement work. CTC Challenge for Change themselves are hands on, full of ideas and most importantly enthusiastic about getting more people cycling"

John Nicklin - Senior Pollution Officer, Lewes District Council

Participant feedback

I have been encouraged by taking part in the scheme to buy a bike and cycle with my family (new cyclist)
I have not been on a bike for over 20 years. I found it lots of fun when I had my first ride outside our offices. I set myself a goal and was very proud that I completed it. (new cyclist)
I have rediscovered the joy of cycling. I have lost nearly 2 stones, and am now down to my ideal weight. I will keep on cycling. (regular cyclist)
