The York Cycle Challenge ran from 14 March to 4 April 2011. 1,320 people from 53 organisations took part, logging an incredible 83,366 miles via 13,144 trips. Despite York being a city with high cycling levels, the Challenge inspired 131 new cyclists to take to their bikes.

"The fun competition motivated people to start cycling or to cycle more. York especially benefitted from the number of new cyclists the Challenge created. The results and feedback from the project evaluation report have helped to inform and steer other cycling work in the city. It's also worth noting that as part of the service and to add to the sustainability of the project, CTC Challenge for Change helped implement a York Bicycle User Group Forum for participating organisations.

Furthermore, since CTC Challenge for Change has been in York, they have made further improvements to their Challenges; they are not complacent and are developing one of the best workplace engagement projects we have seen.”
- Graham Titchener, Programme Manager, Cycling City York

Participant feedback

It created a conversation topic amongst all the cyclists at work both old and new some people who I had never even said hello to before. Great fun.
– Mark E. (Non-Cyclist, Shepherd Group Industrial Division)
I realised how easy it is to cycle into work and how quick/ convenient it is rather than using a car.
– Danielle W. (Occasional Cyclist, Environment Agency)
Didn't realise how much fun it would be... plus... as others took up the Challenge we could ride in groups which made it more fun.
– Steven B. (Regular Cyclist, Shepherd Group Industrial Division)
