The Colchester Cycle Challenge took place from 17-30 May 2010. 870 people from 50 organisations took part, including 152 new cyclists who took to their bikes for the first time in over a year.

65% of Challenge participants were new or occasional cyclists

Three months after the Challenge:

  • 62% of new cyclists reported cycling more often than they had before the Challenge

  • 59% of occasional cyclists reported cycling on more than 2 days per week

  • 42% of occasional cyclists reported cycling to work 2 or more days a week

Participant feedback

It made me re-think the way I made local journeys so it saved money on petrol and helped me to take more exercise. I actually did much more cycling than I expected to.
The challenge helped me to realise it took the same amount of time to bike most places than to take the bus. (occasional cyclist)
